A Sacred Journey Into Girlhood

What is the Flowroot Rite?

Flowroot comes from three words:

Flow (life rhythm, release),

Root (ancestry, grounding),

and Rite (sacred transition).

Together, they reclaim menstruation as more than biology.  It is a sacred passage.

Why It Matters

·       Breaks silence and stigma around menstruation

·       Connects girls to their families, ancestors, and communities

·       Builds self-worth at a pivotal life stage

·       Creates space for healing, joy, and empowerment

Every girl deserves her first cycle to be remembered, honored, and celebrated.

The Flowroot Rite is a trauma-informed, sacred ceremony created by Network of Women NOW to honor a girl’s first menstruation as a moment of belonging, empowerment, and community.

Rituals of the First Cycle

Rituals of the First Cycle is a reflective and culturally grounded exploration of menstruation as a rite of passage rather than a moment of silence or shame. Drawing from ancestral traditions, lived experience, and contemporary education, the book invites families, educators, and communities to reimagine a girl’s first cycle as a time of recognition, guidance, and dignity.

Through storytelling, ritual frameworks, and practical insight, the book offers ways to honor menstruation with intention—centering the body as wise, the cycle as sacred, and the girl as worthy of care and celebration. Rituals of the First Cycle bridges tradition and modern life, creating space for healing, memory, and meaningful transition across generations.
